Former Obama EPA Candidate Confirms Clean Technology Position

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ — Kathleen McGinty, former head of Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection and the White House Council on Environmental Quality, has joined Element Partners, a clean technology investment firm, as operating partner. Until recently, McGinty was considered a top contender for the post of EPA administrator under Barack Obama.

Well-known across environmental policy circles, McGinty served as an advisor to Al Gore during his time as U.S. senator and acted as a senior staff advisor to participants in the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. In 1993, McGinty became the first woman to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality and was named deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton.

McGinty moved to India at the end of 1998 where, as a visiting fellow at the Tata Energy Resources Institute in New Delhi, she forged alliances between U.S. and Indian clean energy companies. In 2000, McGinty acted as a counselor to Vice President Al Gore during the presidential campaign and served as a senior policy advisor to the Democratic National Committee.

From 2003-2008, McGinty led the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and chaired the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority. During her tenure, she played a central role in Governor Ed Rendell’s team, attracting more than $1 billion in green tech investments and 3000 new jobs to the state.

McGinty also has private sector experience, including positions at Natsource LLC, Proton Energy Systems, and NRGEnergy.

“We have known Kathleen for years and could not be more excited about her joining Element Partners. She is nationally recognized as one of the transformational leaders in government and has a reputation for making things happen in partnership between the private and public sectors,” said Managing Partner David Lincoln.

“David Lincoln and the other partners at Element are recognized as some of the best in the business. It is a pleasure for me to join their team at a time when economic, energy, and national security imperatives all point in the direction of a clean technology revolution,” said McGinty.
